Bible studies

I have too much to say as usual. And not enough time or energy to say it all. But that's ok because most of you probably wouldn't have enough time to read it. Life. Anyone ever heard the word busy? :)

Update...I have two Bible studies going. Together they add up to 6 people. The first is with two mom's, Susanna and Cassie. Susanna has two little boys, Owen (18mths old) and Oliver (1moth old). Cassie has a little boy Bennet (6mths old). It's a challenge to say the least. I switched the lessons I was using because the first set was taking too long to get through between caring for the precious little ones. So now we are using the series by Karen Lewis, Lifting Up Jesus. I really like these studies. Last night however it felt like Susi and Cassie weren't able to concentrate at all with the little ones. They boys are really quite good for their age. But they have needs that can't wait. It was a bit discouraging as I don't see it getting any easier in the future and this seems to be the only time they can study. But they appear to enjoy the studies and are learning. My other challenge with this one is that Susi uses the NIV and Cassie uses NLT. Both of which have discrepancies in translating chapters on prophecy. This last week Cassie couldn't find her Bible. So she brought her grandma's Bible. It's a Catholic Bible. :) I tried to suggest maybe it would be easier for all of us to use the NKJV since that's what the studies use. They said, "Oh it's fine. I'm following along no problem." *sigh* We study at 7pm CT on Wednesday evenings.

The other study is with Sue, Ron, Mark, and Jordan (a 13y/o neighbor girl of Sue's). I haven't figured out how the other three are related or if they are. Sue bought three books from me when I canvassed last summer. Read that story here under the July 12 section. Ron and Sue live together, but I don't know if they're married or not. They are rural folk through and through. Sue lost her mom last year who she studied the Bible with fairly regularly. They live rather poorly, but I am anxious to see what God will do in their lives. They are incredibly sincere! Jordan has heard next to nothing about religion. She lives with her grandma I gather, who has no interest in it. Jordan wanted to go to church when she was little, but grandma wouldn't take her. So Sue said she's kind of given up. But I think these Bible studies have the potential to bring back the spark and actually answer the questions no one else has taken the time to answer for her. She is bright, but very clueless about the Bible. So it has been a good challenge for me to bring everything down into very simple language and have to give background to every story I tell and every point I make. One thing though, she can read KJV!! A+ for her. :)

Their study is on Tuesdays. We had our second study this week. Mark was gone in TX, but he'd written an opening prayer and left it with a request that I read it at the beginning of the study. He's the most vocal in the study. This first week he was falling asleep a couple times. They all smoke. I can feel it in my lungs when I leave. Ron admitted this last week that he is an alcoholic after I'd mentioned it in an illustration I used. They are so open. Mark the first week said he had once had an experience with God. "It was the most amazing feeling," he said. "Do you want that again, Mark?" I asked. "Oh yeah! That's why I'm here," he immediately responded.

I am humbled by them. I am realizing each week how tremendously privileged I am. It is an awesome thing to present the gospel to people for the first time. Next week I will invite them to ask God into their lives. Pray for them. Sue is struggling. She said she's lost in all the "thee" and "thou" of the KJV. I told her to get a NKJV and it would be a little easier, but promised her that it would get easier the more we studied. She asked why God had so many people killed in the OT. That is a hard question to answer. I did my best. I told her that God never destroys anyone with out giving them chance after chance to accept Him and be freed from the evil that is destroying them. And that is just it, often it is our own actions that bring on destruction. I also explained to her a hazelnut shell version of the great controversy and told her that the devil likes to put his character on God and make us think that God is out to destroy us. But really everything God does is in an effort to save us from the devil. She seemed satisfied for now, but the question still hangs. I don't profess to understand the commands to kill whole nations in the OT either. But I know too much about God love to doubt that He had a plan and it was all mixed with as much mercy as it could be.

Last week Ron pulled down a dusty picture frame off the living room wall with pictures of Jordan as a little girl in it and a drawing she did when she was I think 4y/o. I was stunned. God has a foothold in this little girl. With hardly any knowledge of the Bible and only the answers to the questions she'd asked Ron and Sue (who don't really know much more at this point, only the traditional Christian's knowledge) she had drawn a picture of Jesus and God on a cloud. God is saying to Jesus, "I'm glad you're back." Jesus is saying, "I'm going to get the people." I want this little girl to be there with a smile on her face when He comes to get her! This week she had gotten in trouble at school and was grounded in definitely. I need extra angels to keep that girl out of trouble or at least not grounded! She needs to be in these studies.

Thank you for your prayers. I need them. I feel so inadequate. And I procrastinate so much. Last night I was about in tears. But God is merciful. And He figures out ways to send some of you with encouragement and reminders of His control over all and His love...at just the right time. When these people accept Jesus, you will have been a big part of it. I may be on the front line, but I couldn't stay there long if you weren't backing me with prayer. Thank you!

Overwhelmed...

A word that has too often in my life described me. But this time it's in a good way.

The 5 weeks since I left AFCOE have been very full. From GYC, to lessons at home, to talks with friends, to new revelations of God, to an amazing blessing that I truly feel I have not room enough to receive!

I find myself at the dining room table of dear friends. Friends who have given without asking in return. Friends who will never know how much their kindness means to me.

I love surprises. And I got to give a big one this weekend! I'm in Michigan visiting more friends than I even knew I had up here. :) Last Friday night Abigail walked into vespers with no clue I would be there. Her reaction was priceless. My AFCOE classmate, Christian Smith, was quite taken back to see me walk into church. Other friends didn't even believe it could be me and had to ask what my name was.

Things don't just happen...

Friday I "happened" to run into a friend at PMC when Glesni and I "happened" to be there for her to practice the organ. Dana "happened" to invite me to come with her to her Muslim Relations class and to the Mosque afterwards. I skipped the class, but at the last minute went with them to the Mosque. Sitting there all wrapped up in my head scarf I figured it was just an interesting experience. However, the next day during the Louis Torres training weekend being held at the Hartford church... Abby and I went on outreach together. We "happened" to be given this particular territory. We only had less an hour and knew we'd only probably be able to finish one street. We "happened" to decide to start at the far end of one of the streets. While standing out side the van picking which side we would take and which side Glesni and her team would take a lady opened he door and called out, "No, thank you. We're not interested. We are Muslim." My mouth dropped open. The Mosque! I wished so bad I could have talked to her. She hadn't even given us a chance to say who we were or what we were doing! But she had said no to Glesni's team. Not me! :) "Abby, would you go back with me if I went and tried to talk to that lady?" With a little fear and trepidation Abby agreed to go. Before we got to the door she opened it and pleasantly repeated to us her rejection. But I started talking immediately and excitedly told her I had just visited a Mosque for the first time the day before. "Oh really?" she replied. I told her who we were and that we were doing a survey to discover the needs in the community and that there were a variety of things on there some of which she may be interested in..."like health and family!" :) She readily took the survey and filled it out and checked for the health classes. While she scratched away I talked to her little girl peering up at us from just inside the door. I asked her if she liked the snow and if she'd gotten to play in it. She replied with a nod and a smile. "Have you made a snowman yet?" I asked with enthusiasm. "No, it's too cold," she explained. "I haven't built a snowman in a long time!" I said, "Do you think I'm too big to build snowmen?" She thought about that for a moment and then shyly gave a nod. Abby and I giggled and told each other later that we would build a snowman with each other! The mother handed the survey back. We thanked her for her time and said good bye.

It all just happened, right? :) I think not. I was thrilled and look back and see how God had orchestrated events and circumstances to culminate in that meeting. You know, I had the chance of coming to MI in February instead of this week. :)

I am blessed... And I'm only 3 days into this adventure! By the way, we got 30+ Bible study requests from 20+ teams out of less than an hour of knocking on doors. According to those who have been here for a while, that has never been seen. A true miracle they say. Christian Smith now has 55 Bible study leads to follow up on. I'm going to join him when he goes out this Thursday to visit some of them. Can't wait!

Anxious?

My first week off school has been kind of rough. I now have to put into real life practice the lessons God taught me through the last four months. I haven't had the greatest start at it. But I can say we are making progress. My biggest fear has been the future. I feel like I just flew off the end of a cliff and I don't know where to land. I don't know where God wants me to be. What am I supposed to do with everything I just learned? I need to start classes for ASL soon. I have no job prospects. How am I going to pay my bills and afford school? So my thoughts were turning anxious as they so often do. It is my struggle. I think God is purposely putting me in straight places to get me to relax in His hands. Has He ever failed me yet? No. So what am I worried about? Good question. There are things I'm worried about, but they still are not good excuses.

I confess I have kept late nights lately and have spent a lot of time thinking in those dark hours. It has only created knots in my stomach and burdens. So this morning in my quiet time God decided to speak straight to me. I just finished the book I had been reading for devotions (God In Pain. A must read!). So I was browsing through devotionals looking for what I should study. I was headed to study more of my new pet-topic the knowledge of God. As I open the Bible software I noticed the Morning and Evening Reading devotional by C. H. Spurgeon. {chuckles} God couldn't make it any clearer. Look for yourself.

Morning, December 19 -

         “The lot is cast into the lap, but the whole disposing thereof is of the Lord.”
                                                                                             — Proverbs 16:33

If the disposal of the lot is the Lord’s whose is the arrangement of our whole life? If the simple casting of a lot is guided by him, how much more the events of our entire life—especially when we are told by our blessed Saviour: “The very hairs of your head are all numbered: not a sparrow falleth to the ground without your Father.” It would bring a holy calm over your mind, dear friend, if you were always to remember this. It would so relieve your mind from anxiety, that you would be the better able to walk in patience, quiet, and cheerfulness as a Christian should. When a man is anxious he cannot pray with faith; when he is troubled about the world, he cannot serve his Master, his thoughts are serving himself. If you would “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness,” all things would then be added unto you. You are meddling with Christ’s business, and neglecting your own when you fret about your lot and circumstances. You have been trying “providing” work and forgetting that it is yours to obey. Be wise and attend to the obeying, and let Christ manage the providing. Come and survey your Father’s storehouse, and ask whether he will let you starve while he has laid up so great an abundance in his garner? Look at his heart of mercy; see if that can ever prove unkind! Look at his inscrutable wisdom; see if that will ever be at fault. Above all, look up to Jesus Christ your Intercessor, and ask yourself, while he pleads, can your Father deal ungraciously with you? If he remembers even sparrows, will he forget one of the least of his poor children? “Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he will sustain thee. He will never suffer the righteous to be moved.”

         My soul, rest happy in thy low estate,
         Nor hope nor wish to be esteem’d or great;
         To take the impress of the Will Divine,
         Be that thy glory, and those riches thine.

It hurts...

I don't want to believe it...

It's gone...four months. I'm not the only one with these feelings. But this isn't misery, so company doesn't help.

I thought I would cry all graduation weekend. But strangely I didn't shed a tear. They wouldn't come. Which is very surprising to anyone who really knows me. I cried a lot through the four months. In the beginning I thought I couldn't wait till it was over. I thought I would be glad to have all the work done and behind me. Oh...but now I would take a hundred quizzes and tests...just to be back there again.

The tears are finally coming...but now there's no room 9 or 7 to run to. There's no Mama Tammey. My bungee cord is stretched across 1501 miles. It was all too fast. I don't think any of us thought it would end like this. They tried to tell us, but we must not have been listening close enough.

So many memories...

As one friend who knows what I'm talking about put it..."We had bruised our knees together in prayer. We had blistered our feet together going door to door. We had stretched our poor brains together trying to understand the covenants, and why they even mattered anyway. We had spent countless hours that we should have been asleep trying to finish up our Daniel and Revelation papers. We had lived together. We had laughed together. We had been annoyed by eachother. We had been mad at eachother. We were family." We watched each other transform. We saw the struggles. We rejoiced in the victories. We shared everything. We did everything together. Every little thing had significance. Each spot on campus...the picnic tables, the swing, the rock, the bridge, the prayer garden, the loop, the office, the trails, the gravel pit, the stars... We wrestled through together. We won together. We broke through barriers and over came fear together. We talked late into the night together. We claimed the promises together. We watched God do miracles right in front of our eyes. We stood in wonder together at the amazing privilege we'd been given.

And now it's over. And we are hundreds of miles away.

Oh it hurts... Like I've never hurt before. Like something in the pit of your stomach that is wrenching it and twisting it. Apologies to any of you who are not melancholy. Bless your hearts. Most of you who read my blog probably won't understand at all what is going. But a few of you will... you will... and you may even mingle your tears with mine. Thanks for understanding. I've needed to get this out for a week, but I feared being told to buck up and deal with it.

But I can't anymore...so I have process it out loud. Let it go. And I'll thank those of you who will hold me close and let me just cry...and understand. Because you've been there.

If heavens joy is even half as intense as this pain... Ah, but it will be so much more. We will be together again. And the final touch will be put on our joy as we meet on those glassy shores to wake the song again. We'll see all those people we prayed for, cried for, worked for. We will be together again...someday. Meet me there, friend. And don't be late...please.

Please Jesus, we are so small. How are we gonna do this? But you said we could because you would help us. So here's my fives loaves and two fishes. Do with it as you will. I surrender. Take my fears and my inhibitions, all my burdens, my ambitions. You can use it all to feed them all.* And please, Jesus, keep us faithful. Please. We want to get this done soon. We want to be together again. Not in a class room. But sitting together at your feet. Please Jesus, come soon.

Prayer Request and a News Bit

I just ordered the remaining 50 books I need to reach my goal. I have 24 books left in my inventory right now. PLEASE PRAY that the rest of the books can get shipped today so they will arrive by Friday so I can have them to canvass Sunday. Thanks! :)

Also, if you've been reading my stories you might remember Dorothy, the elderly lady I met here in Douglas. We talked about her involvement in the music of the church there in years gone by. She was the Choir Director. I offered to give a special music there if they ever needed someone. Well she called me this week and said she'd been thinking about it and decided it would be nice to have someone sing for them. They are a small group and don't get that often anymore. So I'm scheduled for this coming Sunday morning. Pray for the Lord's blessings. Thank you! :)

GYC Prayers conclusion

Happy Sabbath! This is a little late in coming, but I have been in bed all week with the flu. I'm finally getting strength back now. But God is good!

I just wanted to say a big thank you from me and on behalf of all those whose lives were touch by the prayers offer before and during GYC. I was personally greatly blessed! There were around 20 of us praying and fasting together that I know of. The results were very visible. The Spirit of God was present in a special way, I believe, at this years conference. The outreach on Sabbath afternoon was amazing! Filling 72 busses and about 60 of us going out on foot around the convention center. I was really looking forward to being able to do outreach this year since I've had to miss it in the past. I was a little disappointed when I couldnt go on a bus, because talking to people on the street is intimidating for me. But I prayed for strength and went out by faith. God is so good! Though we did talk to a few people on the streets our section was mostly town houses so I got to knock on doors and make friends with people in the homes (my favorite thing :). I had a wonderful outreach partner (thank you, Erica, for your faithful prayers and timely offer to our Bible study contact)! We even got Greek cookies as a bonus. ;) But the biggest blessing was when we reassembled for the evening and heard the results of our labors. Thousands of doors knocked on, hundreds of people prayed with, and over 1500 requests for Bible studies! Praise the Lord! That is answers to our prayers, friends! Thank you for joining me!

If you were not able to attend GYC and couldn't watch it online you can go to www.gycweb.org and within a few weeks they should have all the meetings available for audio download. I would love to hear testimonies of how you were blessed by the prayer group or GYC! please share!

Next year is Huston, TX! See you there! Until then stay faithful and let us not cease our prayers!

GYC Prayers Week 4

The last day... Thank you to everyone who has participated! You have made a difference for eternity.

Today I would us like to focus on all those attending GYC as well as those participating from home. Prayers for safe travels. Health. Hearts open to God's truth. Prayers that God will pour out His Spirit on this week.

Some of you may know that this week, starting last Sabbath, there is a special Revival and Reformation emphasis going on. For more information visit www.RevivalandReformation.com. This Sabbath at GYC will be the climax. Our general conference president, Ted Wilson, will be giving the sermon for the worship service. He is asking that throughout this week at 7 o'clock am and pm people will pause and pray for revival, reformation, and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit among us. This coming Sabbath is a day of fasting and prayer as well.

Prayer focus: God's Spirit on GYC. The hearts of all who will hear the messages. That we will allow God into the deep parts of our lives. For safety in travel and outreach.

Promises to claim: And it shall come to pass afterward, [that] I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: Joel 2:28

He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: Psalms 91:15

If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall [your] heavenly Father give theHoly Spirit to them that ask him? Luke 11:13

And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. John 14:13

A revival of true godliness among us is the greatest and most urgent of all our needs. To seek this should be our first work. There must be earnest effort to obtain the blessing of the Lord, not because God is not willing to bestow His blessing upon us, but because we are unprepared to receive it. Our heavenly Father is more willing to give His Holy Spirit to them that ask Him, than are earthly parents to give good gifts to their children. But it is our work, by confession, humiliation, repentance, and earnest prayer, to fulfill the conditions upon which God has promised to grant us His blessing. A revival need be expected only in answer to prayer.--1SM 121 (1887).  {LDE 189.1}

GYC Prayers Week 3

Today we are focusing on praying for young people. In our lives, in our church at large, and in our world.  We are praying for us. It is a broader focus than GYC, but it is just as important. For if we, the young people of this generation, do not take God at His word, we will someday be sending our children off to GYC. That is not what we want. GYC was meant for one generation I believe. The last generation. We are at the boarders of the Promised Land. Will we cross Jordan and posses it? Or will we settle for our music, our parties, our feel good sermons and devotionals?  Will we be content to be safe, secure, comfortable, and horde the message God has entrusted to us? If we do, we may not only spend the rest of our lives in wandering the wilderness, but we may miss out on Paradise all together. I do not want to do that. I have felt convicted of late about the laxness of my Christianity. "Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin." {Heb 12:4} How long do I want to stay here?

A friend of mine just this last week expressed her burden for the youth of her country, Africa, and of our church as a whole. I had yet not come up with a fourth prayer focus. As I thought about what she was sharing I realized that this focus not only has weight for this years conference, but it has even greater weight on the future of GYC itself. So many of us are riding the fence. There will be at GYC those  who have not made a complete surrender of their lives to Christ. Perhaps some of us have not let go of everything. We are holding out on God. Oh friends, it's not worth it. "For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?" {Mark 8:36} Let's give everything.

Prayer focus: Young people. Everywhere, but especially that the young people in our church will let go of everything they are holding onto and take hold of God. For those who are in the valley of decision. For those who have turned their backs. For those who do not know there is more to Christianity than what they have. For us...

Promises to claim: Thus saith the LORD; Refrain thy voice from weeping, and thine eyes from tears: for thy work shall be rewarded, saith the LORD; and they shall come again from the land of the enemy. And there is hope in thine end, saith the LORD, that thy children shall come again to their own border. Jeremiah 31:16, 17

For thou [art] my hope, O Lord GOD: [thou art] my trust from my youth. Psalms 71:5

Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them; Eccl 12:1

Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. 1 Timothy 4:12

He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. Revelation 21:7

The Lord has appointed the youth to be His helping hand.--Testimonies, vol. 7, p. 64

Many a lad of today, growing up as did Daniel in his Judean home, studying God's word and His works, and learning the lessons of faithful service, will yet stand in legislative assemblies, in halls of justice, or in royal courts, as a witness for the King of kings.--Education, p. 262.

With such an army of workers as our youth, rightly trained, might furnish, how soon the message of a crucified, risen, and soon-coming Saviour might be carried to the whole world!--Education, p. 271

GYC Prayers Week 2

Thank you to everyone who is praying for the up coming GYC! You are making a difference! This week I'd like to focus on those who will receive an opprtunity to accept truth during the outreach at GYC. The outreach is one of my favorite parts of GYC. I love going door to door. But the outreach at GYC encompasses more than just the 3 hours on Sabbath afternoon.

It includes the convention center and hotel staff. They will pass us in the halls, see us waiting through long meal lines, and assist us. May we give a beautiful picture of Christ and represent well that noble Name we bare. I want to also pray that we will have opportunity to speak to them of what makes the difference in our lives. They facilitate many conventions, but may there be none they have seen like GYC.

On Sabbath there will be a few thousand people out on the streets talking to several thousand people and knocking on hundreds of doors. Many of the people they will meet have a distorted picture of God, no picture of Him at all, or are lulled to sleep in their "religion" by the enemy. I want to pray that the Holy Spirit will walk those streets right now to prepare the hearts of the people we will meet; that He will set up Divine appointments and give us discernment to meet them. Also, that he will give all those who will be leading the outreach special wisdom, as well as those who will be following up the leads received. And that the hearts of those who will be participating in outreach will be prepared to share His truth; that nothing would hinder their witness; that they will have his unconditional love in their hearts.

Prayer focus: The convention center staff, and Sabbath afternoon outreach (the leaders, participants, Bible workers, and the people in the homes and on the streets that will be met).

Promises to claim: Every place whereon the soles of your feet shall tread shall be yours:... Deuteronomy 11:24

Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. Psalms 2:8

For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say. Luke 12:12

If he puts his trust in the Lord as he travels from place to place, angels of God will be round about him, giving him words to speak that will bring light and hope and courage to many souls.-- Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 314. (1900)  {CM 111.3}

No sooner is the name of Jesus mentioned in love and tenderness than angels of God draw near, to soften and subdue the heart.--Manual for Canvassers, p. 37. (1902)  {CM 111.4}

Those who are born again, who are willing to be guided by the Holy Spirit, doing in Christ's way that which they can do, those who will work as if they could see the heavenly universe watching them, will be accompanied and instructed by holy angels, who will go before them to the dwellings of the people, preparing the way for them. {CM 112.1}

And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. Matthew 25:40
